"Tarpon Fly" 10" x 12" ink and watercolor. I have been getting emails requesting some saltwater patterns. I have to admit that I have never done any saltwater fishing, but I would like to some day. You will be seeing more saltwater patterns painted up. Real cool shapes and great names for the flies. This fly is the Stu Apte Tarpon Fly. I believe that this is a classic pattern for tarpon. So all you salt folks out there, send me your suggestions. I already have a beautiful background ready for the next salt fly!

Muddler minnow blasting through the water column. 15" x 22" watercolor and pastel. I have always been fascinated at how different flies look and move in the water. The way the current moves the fly at will producing a strike from an awaiting fish. The muddler minnow is designed to imitate a bait fish. The story behind this piece is one of movement. Many of my fly paintings are portraits of the fly. Although I attempt to interject character into these portraits, they are what they are, a static representation. This piece is designed to be dynamic. The flowing blue water column parting as it hits the deer hair head of the fly. You just know there is a fish lurking in the shadows ready to strike.

This is another splat fly. I first put down a rough gesso under painting. Once that was dried I applied a watercolor wash over the top. I then took a piece of mat board, put some watercolor on it and smashed it on the paper. I filled in the rest of the details around the splat.

"Fontinalis Fin wet fly" - gouache over watercolor - suggested by Joseph. This was a disaster! Everything is way to tight and there are not enough soft edges. This is what the series is all about though. I will post the good the bad and the ugly! I was also trying to really play the blue and orange compliment off of each other. I will have to try again. I am trying to get the hang of gouache.

Another watercolor splat fly. I brushed some color on a scrap piece of mat board, then pressed it onto watercolor paper. This made the wing of the fly. Then I painted in the rest. It is fun to see what type of pattern you end up with.

The McGinty suggested by Ed. (The McGinty would look great with a Kilt Ed!) Gouache with a watercolor background

Charles McGinty conceived the McGinty in 1883. McGinty was from Chicago and came up with this as a bass fly originally. It was designed to have the appearance of a bee or wasp.
