"Fuzzy Fiber Bait Fish" 17" x 12" Watercolor and gouache. I will be producing a series of saltwater patterns for an upcoming project. This is the first and from what I hear, a tarpon favorite.

Guest Fly Artist - Kevin Powell

"Gooey Green Meanie" I challenged Kevin to come up with a fly in the few spare moments that he has. He constructed this excellent fly using some of his kids toys. I hope he did it during nap time! For those of you who are not familiar with Kevin, He started Red Dirt Studio.

"Potato Stamp" Do you remember when you were a kid and made potato stamps? This is my attempt at a fly potato stamp. I know it is kind of like a roreshock test for fly fisherman to see the fly. The funny thing is that I did not notice the little hand flipping the bird at the back of the tail until I scanned it. I guess that is a salute to all of the fish that I have missed hooking up with. There is no way I could have carved that in. It was hard enough getting the carving of the mediocre fly in as it is.

" Lost!" Another experiment on Yupo. It was fun, but not for me.

'Yupo Experiment 2" I laid down this blue background on Yupo. I wanted it to have a wter appearance. I pulled color out and added gouache. I originally drew the fly with a Sharpie. I Sharpie pulled off the surface once I started to lift tio get whites. I originally had a saltwater fly drwn, but somehow it ended up being a steelhead fly. More experimentation.

"Bunny Diver Experiment" Watecolor and gouache on Yupo paper. I pulled out the Yupo do do a bit of experimenting again. Yupo is a white polyester paper. I can apply watercolor to it, but as soon as I wet it, the color will smear or pickup. There are no pores or surface to absorb the pigment. I started by just laying down different colors on the sheet. Straight bright color, no water if you do it becomes very dull. The cool thing is that if you do not like what you did, just take a damp rag and wipe it off and start over. Some of the white area I lifted the color out. I am not sure that I like this piece. A bit to busy, but hey, that's what experimenting trying things out is all about. This fly looks like some sort of bird with some sort of weird hackle growing out of it's ear.

"River Rock Fly" Gouache on a river rock from an un-named river.

"White and Orange Free Form" Another gouache over watercolor background. No particular pattern, just grabbed the brush, started painting and see what formed. A fun exercise!

"Purple and Orange" Just a quick free form steel head fly. I am getting the itch for Fall Steel head. Had a sheet of watercolor paper with a background on it. I just pulled out the gouache and went at it. No plan just painting.

"Pike Fly 1" Graphite on sketch paper. Andrew aka Trout Buddha over at Zentrout threw down the challenge of drawing some pike flies. I pulled this one out of my box. I am not sure what it is called, hence the title "Pike Fly 1".
