I would guess it's called a "Keeled Coachman". History....hmmmm... A long time ago on a really snag infested Michigan river there was a flyfisher named Gorem Keester. He loved to tie flies on Keel hooks ...sorry, that's about all I can come up with.
It's called a Royal Turtleneck Coachman. About 4 years ago, the fly was developed as a searching pattern for smallmouth bass in southern MI. The keel hook was included in the pattern because the fly received a number of short strikes, resulting in a torn-up wing and no fish. After the keel hook was added to the recipe, the landing rate skyrocketed. The pattern was developed by two bass fishers named Claude Freaner and Richard Warren.
Clearly this is the fly used by the green witch in Wicked. I am sure I saw it on Broadway.
Turtleneck? Good lord, now all we have to do is use a different hook and we can change the name of a pattern???
