"One Fly Logo" Tomorrow is our annual one fly contest. this is the logo that we use on our score sheets. Rules are you get one fly to use. Catch as many fish as you can in a 3 hour period. We use this cool score sheet which has a "No Cheatum Ruler" that you use to measure the fish before you release them. The person with the highest number of inches of fish is the winner. If you loose your fly during the competition, you are done.

"The Big Three" With the big Memorial Day weekend coming up, I decided to draw three flies to cover me for the next few days. The challenge to everyone is this, if you were stranded (fresh or salt water) what are the three flies you wish you had with you? I already have my three - X-Caddis, Gold Ribbed Hares Ear and a Soft Hackle. I have full confidence in these flies if I ever needed them in a survival situation in fresh water. The other pictures show some of the flies and the line that I have wrapped around a canister in my Boy Scout Survival Kit. I hope I never need them, but as the Boy Scouts say, "Be Prepared".

"Orange and Pink Feather Wing" 10" x 12" This is a quick study that I did in preparation for a series of flies I am collaborating with Marty Howard on. I was experimenting with techniques and colors. I have the original of this fly, and I notice a number of proportion issues that I will have to address when painting the final.

"2D-3D" 17" x 12" I started this fly by painting some thick (300gsm) watercolor paper in warm brown tones. I placed random textures and spatters on the paper. Next I drew out each section that I wanted to cut out. Once all of the pieces were cut, it was time to assemble. I glued 1/16" spacers on the back to stand the pieces off from one another. I really like the way the shadows show off the various shapes. I painted the pieces so that they looked like rusty pieces of metal. It took many sharp X-Acto blades to complete all of the cutting!

"Decisions" 10" x 12" Watercolor and gouache. This painting started as color and value study for a larger painting I am working on. I was inspired by the Canadian Stamp Series that shows flies on stamps and decided to add a fly to this study. When I look at this, I want to put a big cartoon idea balloon around the fly!

"Blind Fly" 8" x 10". I got this idea from my friend Woody Hansen. He started a painting by creating the initial sketch blindfolded. You can see him in action here. Woody called me the other night to check on my thumb. We ended up discussing artists like Milford Zorne and Henry Fukuhara who both had macular degeneration, but continued to paint essentially blind. Woody took this idea to see what he would come up with. The above fly was my attempt. Another idea Woody had was to smear Vaseline on eyeglasses. This way you would see shapes, but not be totally blind.
