Guest Artist Steven Vandervate

"Wind River Fly" Oil on board. Steven Vandervate has been painting flies for quite some time. I hooked up (pun intended) with "Van" through a comment on the blog. I visited his site, and was delighted to see the diversity of paintings along with some great fly art. His latest series of ink and colored pencil flies has inspired me to do a few myself. No. 261- FRIDAY FUN FLY

"Bubble Butt Dry" Ink sketch - Alright, I do not know where this came from! I sat down looked at the paper and this is result. The mind works in strange ways. I did get a good laugh and laughter is good for the soul. I think this may have been a result of the discussion we had last night at a TU meeting about waders. Joseph Meyer at One More Cast had a great presentation about waders and wader care. I guess my sub conscience picked up on some of the side discussions about portly and stout people in waders. Or, maybe this is my answer to a high floating dry fly. Or it could be a new beer - Bubble Butt Stout! Anyways, hope you get a good laugh!

"Missed-Start" Watercolor. This is the start of a commission piece that I am working on. I find that I start to tighten up when I know That the piece has to be right. This image represents a false start of a fly painting. Paper is cheap and I will start again. You will see the final.

Texas Women Fly Fishers

The TWFF (Texas Womens Fly Fishers) requested the use of some of my fly images for their cookbook which they use as a fundraiser for their organization. I do get a fair amount of requests, and I have the greatest respect for those who ask permission to use intellectual property. Anyway, the above image shows the cover of their cookbook. There are many more fly drawings included in the cookbook. If you are interested in the cookbook, do not hesitate to drop the TWFF a line. Here is the the description on the inside cover:

"Every couple of months a happy group of fly fishers gather somewhere in the state of Texas….or occasionally other states close by, to enjoy the sport, the outdoors, sometimes the shopping, and each other. Traditionally, these outings begin with the Mullet Mixer. This is a chance to catch up with one another, meet new friends, get the lay of the land….and most importantly, and receive good advice on how to fish the local waters.

The Mullet Mixer relies on the “sacrament of the covered dish” to fuel the evening. Those of us driving (or flying) hell bent across the state of Texas after work may show up with a six pack from the Stop ‘N’ Go and the local fried chicken or bar-b-que. Always good, always consumed gratefully. But treats from the local kitchens show up, too. There is always a flurry of “send me that recipe” but often we get home, get busy and then forget to send it on or bring it to the next Mullet Mixer.

JK Studio Website is Live

The Jeff Kennedy Studio website is now live! There are some areas that I am working on and more text needs to be added on some of the gallery images, but I should have them complete in the next few days. If you have ever worked on a website, the works seems endless. It feels like a project that never seems to be finished. It also doe not help when you are a perfectionist! "Drake Emerger" 10" x 16" Watercolor. Another AuSable River favorite.

"Robert's Drake - Do over" Watercolor. After looking at yesterday's Robert's Drake, there were many items I did not like. I have discovered that sometimes I rely on the gouache as a crutch to fill in areas that I made an error in. This time I decided to use nothing but watercolor. Also, the body on the other Drake was too yellow and not enough of the deer hair showed thru. The other thing that was off were the proportions. So I think I corrected them on this version. A more loose interpretation without being overworked.

"Roberts Drake" 12"x 20" A great Michigan trout pattern. I have many of these beauties in my drake box! I have many fond memories holding trout with this fly hanging out of the corner of their mouth.

"Hairy Mary" Watercolor and gouache. 9" x 12". Numerous Salmon flies are named after women, which makes me a bit concerned when it comes to this one! This is a classic Summer Atlantic salmon fly.

"Autumn Dry" Sharpie on a leaf. Believe it or not but we have a number of trees in our neck of the woods that are changing. I picked one up off the ground during a walk and decided to adorn it with a little sketch.

Keel Fly

Here is the advertisement I found in a May 1969 issue of Outdoor Life. The winner of the original fly is Chris D. He won by 1 minute! Congrats Chris. HG and William Tapply wrote about the fly in their book "Gone Fishing" which you can see the chapter excerpt here.
